Before sending money to Cuba: 7 checks that prevent scams
How much do you want your family to receive today?
A practical checklist to confirm that the service you are going to use identifies the company, explains its conditions and offers traceable channels. It includes red flags and the controls VeltroPay applies to each transfer.
See the checklist Back to the transfer guideSecurity checklist: 7 steps before sending
If a remittance service to Cuba does not answer any of these 7 points clearly, consider another option. An operator’s seriousness is measured by how easily it can prove these details, not by its marketing.
- 1
Verify the company name and the commercial registry
Any legitimate platform must publish who provides the service, its full conditions and a verifiable support channel, with information accessible from the footer or legal terms. If you do not find any of that, consider another option.
- 2
Check that the website uses HTTPS and a valid certificate
The green lock does not guarantee honesty, but its absence is a sure sign of risk. Any service that requests your payment data without HTTPS - or with expired certificates - must be discarded immediately.
- 3
Check the license or authorization to move money
In Spain, remittance services often operate as a Payment Entity under the Banco de España, or as tied agents. Ask to see the license number or authorization. If the service does not respond clearly, do not send.
- 4
Confirm the recipient's data before paying
Make sure you have the full name (as it appears on their ID), the delivery area and, if it is a card deposit, the correct card details. An error in the name can block the transfer and cause delays of several days.
- 5
Compare payment methods and check bank coverage
Use only the methods that appear within the checkout and keep the reference. Be suspicious if you are asked to pay outside the platform or to a personal account other than that indicated in the conditions.
- 6
Read the cancellation and refund conditions
Before paying, check what happens if you cancel the transfer, if the recipient does not receive it or if there is an error in the data. Serious services have a written refund policy and human support that responds in hours, not days.
- 7
Confirm the support channel and service hours
Check that there are real and traceable support channels (Telegram, email or form) with verifiable response. At VeltroPay the team responds in Spanish and can contact you directly if the case requires it.
Red flags: when not to send under any circumstances
These signs appear in almost every remittance scam involving Cuba. If you spot even one, walk away from the transaction.
No registered company name or visible address
If you cannot know which company is behind the service, do not send. Legal transparency is the first indicator of seriousness.
Abnormally good exchange rates
If the promised exchange rate is much higher than the market rate, it usually hides fees on receipt, delays in delivery or outright fraud.
Payments outside the platform
A payment requested by private message or to a personal account may make traceability and claims difficult. Always verify the recipient and the conditions before paying.
No verifiable reviews or very new reviews
A service with zero reviews or only reviews created in the last 30 days is suspicious. Search for reviews on Trustpilot, Google and Cuban diaspora forums.
Pressure to send 'urgent' or 'before the rate changes'
Urgency tactics are typical of scams. A serious platform does not rush you: it explains the cost and the delivery time and lets you decide.
Support only through untraceable channels (DM, personal Telegram)
If the only contact is the private message of a personal profile, it is difficult to verify who provides the service and how to file a claim.
Regulatory framework Spain - Cuba
Knowing which rules apply helps you understand what documentation a legitimate service may ask you for, and why. These are the three frameworks that affect any transfer from Spain to Cuba.
Banco de España and SEPBLAC
Payment service providers in Spain must comply with anti-money-laundering (AML) rules and know their customer (KYC). SEPBLAC is the competent authority, which is why for transfers above certain amounts you may be asked for additional documentation. This is not an obstacle: it confirms that the service operates within the legal framework.
OFAC compliance and international sanctions
Cuba is subject to OFAC sanctions. Reputable platforms route transfers through structures that comply with these restrictions (accounts under an OFAC general licence, authorised correspondents). Ask how the service complies with OFAC: a vague answer is a warning sign.
Data protection (GDPR)
Your personal data and the recipient’s are protected by the GDPR. The privacy policy must specify who receives the data, where it is stored and for how long. If a service has no privacy policy or says ‘we do not collect data’, it is lying: any transfer collects data by legal requirement.

Frequently asked questions about safety
Remittances may be subject to legal, identity and source-of-funds checks depending on the provider, the amount and the operation. Check VeltroPay’s conditions and contact support for a specific case.
How do I know whether the service I am using is legitimate?Check the company name, HTTPS, the conditions, the privacy policy and a verifiable support channel. These are basic signs of transparency, but they do not replace checking official registers nor, on their own, guarantee that the service is legitimate.
What do I do if I lose the money because of an error in the details?Contact support immediately and give the transfer reference. If the transfer has not yet been processed, it can usually be cancelled or corrected at no cost. If it has already been delivered to the wrong recipient, recovery depends on the method: with VeltroPay, card transfers leave a bank trail and cash payments require coordination with the local agent.
What documentation can I be asked for when sending money to Cuba?Depending on the operation, they may request identification, proof of residence, proof of the source of funds and verifiable details of the recipient. The scope depends on the controls that apply to the case; support can tell you which specific documentation is missing.
Can VeltroPay see the recipient’s money in Cuba? No. VeltroPay only processes the transfer up to the moment of delivery. Once the money is on the recipient’s card or has been handed over in cash, it is no longer under our control. That is why we always recommend checking the recipient’s details carefully before confirming.
How do I avoid being phished when sending money to Cuba?Never pay through links received by SMS, WhatsApp or unsolicited email. Always go straight to the official site (veltropay.es) by typing the URL in your browser. VeltroPay will never ask for your password by email or send you unsolicited payment links. If you receive anything suspicious, report it to support.
What happens if the recipient does not collect the cash transfer?Cash transfers have a documented collection window. If it is not collected in time, support tries to contact the recipient and, if that also fails, the money is returned to the sender minus the costs of the delivery attempt. This policy is detailed before you confirm the transfer.
